PERSONAL STATEMENT
I am a hardworking and motivated individual looking for a role in technology. I am a quick learner who enjoys working in a team.TAP
Critical. "Hardworking", "motivated", "quick learner" appear on 90% of CVs and mean nothing without evidence. Replace with 3 specific sentences: what you do, one real outcome, and your target role.
SKILLS
Python, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Java, C++, PHP, SQL, React, Angular, Vue, Node.js, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, TensorFlow, Machine Learning...TAP
Critical. 40+ skills with no context = credibility at zero. Recruiters assume you're proficient in nothing. Curate to 10–15 real skills grouped by category: Front-End / Back-End / Tools.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Junior Developer · TechSolutions Ltd Jun 2022–Present
Responsible for developing software featuresTAP
Critical. "Responsible for" is the weakest phrase on any CV — it describes a job description, not an achievement. Rewrite: "Built [X] using [Y], which [measurable result]."
Worked on the front-end teamTAP
Critical. Which features? What stack? What changed? Every bullet needs: specific verb + object + outcome. This sentence says nothing.
Attended daily stand-up meetingsTAP
Remove this. Attending meetings is a baseline expectation, not an achievement. Replace with something you built, fixed, or shipped.
IT Support Intern · Various Companies (Temp Roles)TAP
Weak. "Various Companies" signals instability or hidden gaps. Name every employer with accurate dates, even short placements.
EDUCATION
BSc Computer Science · University of Manchester 2019–2022
Grade: 2:2TAP
Weak. Leading with a 2:2 with nothing to offset it draws attention to it. Lead with a dissertation topic, project, or award instead. The grade matters less than the evidence around it.
HOBBIES & INTERESTS
Playing video games, watching Netflix, going to the gym and socialising with friends.TAP
Remove this section. It adds nothing and wastes space. If you keep hobbies, only include tech-relevant activities: hackathons, open source, side projects, meetups.
REFERENCES
References available upon request.TAP
Remove this line. It's assumed. Every candidate has references. Use this space for an achievement instead.

Jamie Chen
React Developer — E-commerce & Fintech SpecialistTAP
Excellent. A recruiter knows what you do in 2 seconds. A targeted headline is the single highest-impact change on any CV — before they read a single bullet, they know you're relevant.
linkedin.com/in/jamiechen · github.com/jamiechen-dev · ManchesterTAP
Strong. LinkedIn AND GitHub linked directly. In tech, these are your proof. Employers click them before they finish reading. A blank LinkedIn is a red flag in 2025.
PROFESSIONAL PROFILE
React Developer with 2+ years building high-performance e-commerce interfaces. Delivered a checkout redesign that reduced cart abandonment by 23% at current employer. Seeking a front-end role at a product-led company. Available immediately.TAP
Excellent. Three sentences: sector + seniority, one real number, clear target + availability. This is everything a recruiter needs to decide to keep reading. "Hardworking and passionate" has zero percent of this power.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Front-End Developer · ShopBright (E-commerce SaaS), ManchesterSep 2022–PresentTAP
Smart framing. "(E-commerce SaaS)" is added to the company name inline. Any e-commerce employer immediately sees relevant context without Googling the company. Small detail, immediate relevance signal.
Redesigned checkout flow in React/TypeScript, reducing cart abandonment by 23% and adding £180k ARRTAP
Masterclass bullet. Technology used + specific metric + business impact. Three data points in one sentence. Template every bullet should follow: built [X] using [Y], resulting in [Z].
Reduced page load from 4.2s → 1.1s via code splitting and lazy loading, lifting conversion rate 11%TAP
Two metrics, one bullet. Technical measurement + commercial consequence. Shows you understand performance has a business cost — rare in juniors and memorable to hirers.
Built reusable component library (40+ components) across 3 squads; reduced dev time ~30%
Mentored 2 junior developers; introduced weekly code reviews and PR template standards
SELECTED PROJECTS
OpenCart Tracker — Next.js, PostgreSQL · github.com/jamiechen-dev/opencart
Real-time cart abandonment SaaS — 120 active users, £0 ad spend, featured on ProductHuntTAP
Proof, not claims. 120 real users and a ProductHunt feature. No recruiter can question your capability when evidence like this exists. This section alone has got candidates interviews they had no right to get on paper.
EDUCATION
BSc Computer Science (2:1) · University of Manchester 2018–2021
Dissertation: 'Optimising React render performance in large-scale SPAs' — graded 78%
Before You Practise — How Interviews Actually Work

Tap any card to understand what interviewers are really scoring. Most candidates fail not because they lack skills — but because they don't understand the game.

🧠 What interviewers actually score
Interviewers assess four things in every answer: clarity (do you understand the question?), structure (can you communicate logically?), evidence (can you prove it, not just claim it?), and self-awareness (do you know your own strengths and gaps?). Technical ability is the entry ticket — the other four decide who gets hired.
📋 How a tech interview is structured
Most tech interviews follow this sequence: (1) recruiter screen — motivation, availability, salary; (2) technical round — coding, systems, or take-home task; (3) behavioural round — STAR-method questions about real situations; (4) final / culture fit — meeting the team lead. Prepare differently for each stage, not with one generic prep.
🤝 Soft skills that decide close calls
When two candidates are technically equal, these win the role: communication (clear, concise, no jargon unless asked), curiosity (genuine questions about the role and team), composure (staying calm when you don't know the answer), coachability (showing you act on feedback), and commercial awareness (understanding that code serves a business outcome).
💡 The STAR method explained
Situation — Set the scene briefly (1–2 sentences). Task — What was your specific responsibility? Action — What did YOU do? (Use "I", not "we".) Result — What was the measurable outcome? Always finish with a number, a percentage, or a clear business impact. Interviewers remember results — they forget descriptions.
🚫 The 5 interview killers
(1) Criticising a previous employer — never, even if it's true. (2) Not having questions prepared — signals low interest. (3) Giving vague answers without examples — "I'm a good communicator" means nothing without a story. (4) Over-explaining when a short answer is better — read the room. (5) Failing to research the company — basic and unforgivable.
🔍 How to research a company properly
Before any interview: check their LinkedIn for recent news and team growth, read their last 3 blog posts or press releases, look at their job posts to understand their stack, find the interviewer on LinkedIn and note their background, and prepare one question that shows you've done this homework. Five minutes of research separates curious candidates from forgettable ones.
BEHAVIOURAL
Tell me about a time you faced a technical challenge you didn't know how to solve. What did you do?
💡 Use the STAR method: Situation → Task → Action → Result. Be specific about the tech and quantify the outcome where possible.
